Outdoor living rooms have become increasingly popular over the years, and with most of us revising our summer plans to stay closer to home, we will be spending more time than ever in our yards! Here are 8 tips to transform your backyard into a sanctuary.

  1. DIY Deck

While most Rohit homes come complete with a deck! A deck instantly gives your yard major appeal while adding resale value to your home.

BONUS: Spice up your deck with a large outdoor rug. This is a good way to include a pop of colour in your yard and presents an inexpensive way to change up a space without having to go through the process of painting or staining a deck.

  1. Create shade and privacy

Clear an area on your deck or in your yard and build a pergola or a gazebo. There are tons of pre-fabricated options available at home stores, or you can make it into a fun DIY!

BONUS: Add curtains for extra shade and create the ultimate backyard living room.

DOUBLE BONUS: Hook up a projector outdoors and use it as a projector screen to create a backyard theatre that only airs your favourite flicks!

  1. Seating

Outdoor seating is one of the most important features to step up your backyard game! There are lots of different patio arrangements available – from sectionals to adirondack chairs – or you can create your own furniture out of wooden pallets.

  1. Water Feature

Looking for a way to spice up a smaller yard? A fountain is a great use of space! It can be tucked away in a small garden or used as a main feature in the yard.

  1. Add some warmth

Adding a fire pit or a fire table is a great way to add longevity to the use of your backyard oasis – allowing you to utilize your yard even as summer begins to turn to fall.

BONUS: While there is no replacement for a real fire pit, a propane or natural gas fire table allows you to enjoy the fire even when municipal fire bans are in effect.

  1. Light it up

Outdoor lighting gives your backyard a starry-night feel. Drape string lights down from a pergola or across your outdoor living space.

BONUS: Line your patio or garden path with torches and/or lanterns for soft lighting. Alternatively, use citronella torches to keep the pesky mosquitoes out of your space!

  1. Add some fun

Jungle gyms, swing sets, and treehouses are a necessity with little ones! Build a playhouse to give your children a playspace of their own.

BONUS: Add some adult fun! Set up lawn games like bocce ball, ladder ball, and cornhole – all great ways to add recreation to your backyard and can easily be put away when you need.

  1. Work on your green thumb

Plant a garden to enjoy fresh veggies all summer long! If vegetables aren’t your thing, instead plant a flower garden.

BONUS: If you do not have a large area to dedicate to a garden, try planter boxes or a vertical planter.

With these great ideas, you're sure to have a beautiful yard that you and your family will enjoy for years!
